Parenting Assessments with Consideration of any Special Needs

The assessment of disabled children must address the needs of the parents and carers. Good practice is also underpinned by an approach to parenting and learning disability which addresses needs relating to both impairment and the disabling barriers of unequal access and negative attitudes.

Analysis of risk and need in assessment of carers’ ability to parent their children must take any special needs into consideration; IFS utilises appropriate assessment programmes designed to meet special needs, for example, drawing on the Parent Assessment Manual (Dr Sue McGaw) in assessing parents with a learning disability.
